  • Position Summary
  • Under the direct supervision of the Head Mechanic, the Bus Mechanic is responsible for assisting in the maintenance, inspection, and repair of school buses and other district vehicles
  • This position supports daily transportation operations by ensuring all vehicles are safe, reliable, and compliant with applicable regulations.Key

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of school bus engines, transmissions, brakes, and related mechanical systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections in accordance with NJDOT and district schedules
  • Assist with disassembly and reassembly of engines and major components
  • Inspect, service, and repair tires, including mounting and balancing as needed
  • Perform routine servicing including oil changes, lubrication, and fluid checks
  • Maintain accurate service records, inspection reports, and work orders
  • Assist with fueling, lubricating, and maintaining shop equipment and supplies
  • Support troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical issues
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Mechanic

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of mechanical tools, equipment, and safety practices
  • Basic understanding of diesel engines and automotive systems preferred
  • Ability to use and learn diagnostic and repair equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Criminal History approval from the state of New Jersey License

Requirements

  • Valid New Jersey Driver's License required
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements required or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe Compensation
